Entering in dog shows or championships

Earning top honors in their respective categories is something many competitive dog owners dream about, yet what many of them do not realize when they enter for the first time, is that the final glory does not come without a price.


Dog shows today are not just another sporting contest. In fact, they are quite different, supported by not only furry competitors and their loyal fans, but also by an entire society, built solely around these extraordinary championships and competitions. These clubs and their members have their own periodicals, services, and even some dog-tailored fashions.


There are many different types of dog competitions. Categories may be based on appearance, obedience, agility, how proficiently the animal can hunt, herd, guide, track or do any other kind of activity. Some shows are limited to one particular kind of purebred, such as terriers or poodles, while others do not limit themselves to such basic requirements and are open to any canine possessing the necessary qualities to become a true champion. Many of these competitions are sponsored locally; however, some do branch out statewide, nationally or even go international, bringing even more excitement and exposure to everyone involved.


Flyball competitions are part of the most exciting and entertaining dog events. In this relay race, teams of four dogs compete against each other on a course. They run to a ramp, jump on a platform, grab a ball that is released, and run back to the start where the next dog is waiting for his turn. Dogs compete in different size divisions, however, canines built for speed enjoy, a distinct advantage.


It is important to remember that not all dogs or breeds are suited to sustain trials and win awards. Some of them are just meant to be loving pets, caring friends waiting for us at the door when we come home at night. Do not forget, they too are champions, even if it is on less competitive level!
